We are pleased to announce that Brill has just released the book \u201cThe Language of Othering in a Diverse Europe,\u201d edited by Marta Falkowska and Jadwiga Linde-Usiekniewicz. The book is the result of research conducted as part of the SEED4EU+ project \u201cNaming for Othering in a Diversified Europe\u201d (NODE, 2023\u20132025, project leader: Marta Falkowska), a joint initiative of the University of Warsaw, Charles University in Prague, and Heidelberg University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to funding from the SEED4EU+ and Excellence Initiative \u2013 Research University (Action I.2.4) programs, the book is available in an open access form on the publisher\u2019s website: https:\/\/brill.com\/display\/title\/72838<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summary<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This book explores how language is used to create division and discrimination in diverse European societies by emphasizing differences in ethnicity, race, national identity, beliefs, or appearance. The authors analyze how public discourse\u2014particularly in political and media narratives\u2014shapes and reinforces an \u201cus vs. them\u201d mindset. They examine words and expressions that denigrate or marginalize specific groups in Polish, German, Czech, Slovak, and Croatian, and observe how certain communities are also reclaiming terms that were once hurtful. The analyses of linguistic strategies employed in the process of othering demonstrate that the concept of othering can be effectively applied to linguistic data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Autorzy i autorki prac sk\u0142adaj\u0105cych si\u0119 na niniejszy tom badaj\u0105, w jaki spos\u00f3b j\u0119zyk wykorzystywany jest do tworzenia i utrwalania opozycji MY \u2013 ONI (ang. othering<\/em>) w zr\u00f3\u017cnicowanych wewn\u0119trznie spo\u0142ecze\u0144stwach europejskich. Analizuj\u0105 wybrane \u015brodki j\u0119zykowe, przede wszystkim leksykalne, wyst\u0119puj\u0105ce w j\u0119zykach polskim, niemieckim, czeskim, s\u0142owackim i chorwackim, s\u0142u\u017c\u0105ce konstruowaniu negatywnie postrzeganej grupy ONI w r\u00f3\u017cnego typu dyskursach publicznych. G\u0142\u00f3wn\u0105 funkcj\u0105 tych wyra\u017ce\u0144 jest podkre\u015blanie r\u00f3\u017cnic mi\u0119dzy MY a ONI \u2013 etnicznych, rasowych, \u015bwiatopogl\u0105dowych czy dotycz\u0105cych wygl\u0105du.
